Hi! I’m Tom McMenamin.

I’m an experienced startup founder and R&D engineer in Sydney, Australia.

  • My deepest technical expertise is in electronics / IOT. But I am a generalist with a broad skillset that allows me to design concepts and produce quality, functional prototypes that customers would buy. Even for new & complex technologies.

    My passion is doing this quickly, while retaining the ability to iterate on those designs based on early customer feedback.

    My startup experience also gives me expertise in the commercial side of hardware products - developing strategies, forcasting costs at scale, IP protection etc.

  • I was head of product at BioScout for 4 years and oversaw the growth of the company from 4 to 20 FTE. I led BioScout’s technical product development, hiring and management, as well as inventing the LeafScout product.

    Previously to this, I founded Pixelated Induction (Startmate 2019) and Re;Start Ev (EnergyLab 2018).

  • My business card is also a fully functioning product - a batteryless, energy harvesting soil moisture sensor. It can help you keep your plants happy. I did this to communicate my approach as an engineer and designer - you can learn more here and request one for yourself if you’d like!

Rapid Prototyping

I can 3D print, CNC and even prototype PCBs locally in Sydney (or help you get it done cheaper overseas, if the lead time works).

There are also rush options available to get you out of any tight spots.

  • Times vary based on size and complexity of order, but for single items the following are a good guidline:

    FDM 3D Printing: 3-5 Days.
    PCB Protyping: 3-5 Days
    Other 3D Printing: 7-14 Days.
    CNC Machining: 7-14 Days
    PCB Protyping: 3-5 Days
    Injection Molding: 20-30 Days

  • FDM 3D printing can be ordered instantly through the website! Costs for other projects require a quotation.

MVP Acceleration & Support

I will collaborate with you to accelerate the design and building of your MVP so that you have something that your customers will pay for and that you can painlessly iterate upon.

I can also help you with the design of pilot projects and how to structure MVP sales to achieve your first revenue.

  • Depending on complexity, real progress can be made in 6-8 weeks with the prototyping tools I have available.

    This will get you your MVP, that you should be able to trial with customers on a paid basis (excluding applications with special regulatory and certification requirements).

  • Project-based quotation.

    Cost will vary based on your stage, internal team bandwidth and technical skillset.

    I will provide advice, remove blockers and fill in gaps so that you move as quickly as possible.

    Free 3D printing and Electronics prototyping are included for duration of the project. We shouldn’t be disincentivised to iterate!

Technical Consulting & Fractional CTO

I can develop smart products that work globally, set up your fleet management database and data processing, and even build your customer portals and dashbards using low code tools.

I will then support you along the journey of testing, iteration and refinement.

  • Initial Development Phase (12 weeks): I will leverage all of the equipment, experience and networks at my disposal to get you a proof of concept or MVP as quickly as possible, with a complete product stack around it.

    Fractional CTO phase (ongoing): The MVP is the most intense development period, and the most important to get right. However, product refinement, technical assistance, and advice around IP and Certificaton strategy are all necessary ongoing activities with a hardware product.

    Initial Development Phase:     Project-based, starting at 20k AUD + GST.

    Fractional CTO phase: on an as needed basis at an hourly rate.
